5-nucleotidase (5′NT) is associated with the canalicular and sinusoidal plasma membranes.
Its function is not defined.
5′NT is also found in the intestines, brain, heart, blood vessels, and endocrine pancreas.
Serum 5′NT levels are not affected by gender or race, but age does affect the level; values are lowest in children and increase gradually, reaching a plateau at about age 50.
As with GGT, the primary role of the serum 5’NT level is to identify the organ source of an isolated increase in serum alkaline phosphatase.
The 5’NT level is not increased in bone disease but mainly in hepatobiliary disease.
