Reye’s syndrome is a rare but life-threatening disease characterized by acute brain damage (encephalopathy with cerebral edema) and liver function problems (fatty infiltration of the liver).
It occurs acutely in previously healthy children.
It is often associated with a previous viral infection such as chickenpox or the viral flu.
There is evidence of a relationship between illness and acetylsalicylic acid intake during the prodromal phase of viral illness.
Reye’s syndrome is not contagious and does not develop lifelong immunity.
No genetic transmission is known.
