What is the trend of bariatric surgery today?
Over the last several years we have seen trends change in bariatric surgery.
Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, for example, has all but ceased to exist as a primary bariatric operation. Many bands have been removed.
The laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is now the most commonly performed bariatric/metabolic operation, worldwide.
The gastric bypass continues to be performed, both as a primary operation and as a revision or conversion option, as it has a very consistent and reliable postoperative course and outcome pattern.
Today, all bariatric surgery is performed laparoscopically.
As more information is gleaned, hopefully we will be able to better fit a specific operation to a specific patient.
